Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship at University of Kansas Medical Center
Overview:
The advanced endoscopy fellowship program at the University of Kansas Medical Center has been developed as a one-year program devoted for the training of advanced endoscopy procedures. This program has been designed to train fellows to achieve procedural competence in all aspects of ERCP and EUS, endoscopic mucosal resection, double balloon enteroscopy, luminal stenting, endoscopic eradication therapy for Barrett’s esophagus and also get some hands on experience on more advanced procedures like POEM, Full thickness resection and ESD.
Successful completion of the program will provide trainees with skills required to pursue a career in Advanced Endoscopy in both academics and private practice.
Facilities and Resources:
Fellows in this program will see patients at the University of Kansas Medical Center. The nature of the training provided by the program will expose the trainees to a diverse patient pool. The fellow will have the opportunity to participate in a least 800 ERCP’s and 1500 EUS procedures amongst others.
Objectives:
The major goals of this program are.
1. To become proficient in diagnostic and therapeutic ERCP, EUS, and EUS-guided FNA/FNB, therapeutic EUS procedures under the supervision of a faculty member.
2. To become proficient in endoscopic mucosal resection, management of dysplastic Barrett’s, luminal stenting, double balloon enteroscopy
3. To gain experience in the performance and management of patients undergoing these procedures
4. To understand the risks, indications, and contraindications of these invasive procedures
5. To actively engage and initiate independent research projects
Rotation Schedule:
The advanced endoscopy fellow will have the appointment of Clinical Instructor in Medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. The fellow will perform advanced endoscopy procedures under the supervision of a faculty for four days in a week and independently staff a general endoscopy suite one half day of the week. The fellow will also share call with the rest of the general GI faculty ranging from 2-4 weeks in a year in addition to staffing 2-4 weeks of general gastroenterology inpatient consults (with GI fellows).
