Additional Information about Program

Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship

Third-Tier Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship

The Section of Gastroenterology and the Center for Digestive Health at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health offers a one-year advanced fellowship opportunity offering extensive training in therapeutic endoscopy. The fellowship focuses on developing a broad knowledge base related to therapeutic endoscopy, an ability to generate relevant differential diagnoses based on history and physical examinations, an understanding of indications and contraindications of therapeutic procedures, and skill at performing these procedures safely and effectively, as well as an appreciation of the humanistic and ethical aspect of medicine.

The faculty consists of five physicians who have expertise in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) as well as therapeutic endoscopy, including stricture dilation, enteral stent placement, double-balloon enteroscopy, fistula closure and more. If training in endoscopic ultrasound is desired, the fellow will rotate with the five faculty who perform endoscopic ultrasound.

The third-tier advanced endoscopy fellow will have completed a three-year residency in internal medicine and an ACGME-approved fellowship in gastroenterology by the start date of the academic fellowship year. The fellow must be eligible for Washington state medical licensure and for privileges to perform routine endoscopic procedures at Virginia Mason, including EGD and colonoscopies. Candidates’ gastroenterology training director must provide a written attestation that the candidate is competent and qualified to perform and be credentialed in basic endoscopy at an independent level. We cannot consider applicants with J1 visa status.

The Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship for the 2024–2025 academic year is FILLED. The application period for the 2025-2026 year is now CLOSED. In December, we will begin accepting applications.

To apply, submission of TWO separate applications is required:

1.Submit an Advanced Endoscopy Training for Fellowship Common Application and required accompanying materials to ASGE via the ASGE website; AND
